2015-2016 Red Clover Award

Red Clover Award

2015-2016

See all the books.  Access ideas and links related to the books at the Red Clover web site. I highly recommend visiting this site with your child to see the books that we’ve been reading as well as allowing them to dive deeper into the books by accessing related content.

The Red Clover award program is Vermont’s children’s choice picture book award.  Every year ten outstanding picture books are selected by a committee of teachers and librarians as the year’s Red Clover nominees. Students in grades K-4 all around the state of Vermont listen to the ten nominees and then vote on their favorite in late March/early April.  Voting takes place in April and the winner of this year's Red Clover Award will be announced in May.

The online book fair has a larger selection of books than what will be at the school fair. Books purchased at the online fair will ship for free to the school 24-48 hours after the online fair ends on October 8th.
Our goal is to raise money to buy high interest books for our library collection. Third and fourth grade students will be helping to select the books for library with guidance and with a budget. Please help us reach this goal through reading. Every book purchased at the on-site book fair and online book fair increases our profit to go towards our goal.

Kindergarteners squeezing every minute out of library

During a kindergarten class yesterday I read the Red Clover nominee, Unicorn Thinks He's Pretty Great (which had the kids cracking up).  Afterwards I helped kindergarteners find the books they wanted to bring home.  I'm always interested in what they want...because they usually know what they want and it is a great way to get to know their personal interests.  Very rarely do I hear a student say, "I don't know what to pick out." They love to learn.  They love to read.  We always say, "They're like sponges."  It's true.

There was a moment today after helping them find their books where I stopped and looked around and the following images show what I saw.  It was a perfect moment.

Look how these kindergarteners use their time in the library.

Sitting in the story chair reading (or showing) a book to an audience

Reading with a friend on the couch

Finding a quiet space to read alone

Looking for books on the library catalog with the library's Chromebooks

Listening to an audio book at the library's listening center

The Red Clover Award 2014-2015

The Red Clover award program is Vermont’s children’s choice picture book award.  Every year ten outstanding picture books are selected by a committee of teachers and librarians as the year’s Red Clover nominees.  All of the selected nominees were written the previous year.  Students in grades K-4 all around the state of Vermont listen to the ten nominees and then vote on their favorite in late March/early April.  The winner of this year's Red Clover Award will be announced in May.

This year’s nominees feature fantastic authors and illustrators.  There are fiction and nonfiction selections.  There is an excellent Red Clover web site that features activities and web sites related to the books. I highly recommend visiting this site with your child to see the books that we’ve been reading as well as allowing them to dive deeper into the books by accessing related content.
